"Press Cameraman Story" Exhibition

Tokyo Photographic Art Museum
Finished
With a purpose to document and deliver news as fast as possible, press photographers captured the chaotic wartime of the Showa era, but some of them showed original aesthetic intentions in their works. For instance, Koyo Kageyama captured the defining moment at the conference between the leaders of the two countries, Yamashita and Percival, where the fall of Singapore to the Japanese in 1942 was marked. Aside from his journalistic work, he also left a beautiful series which traced the short life of his son who passed away at the age of five. Another figure who also produced artistic photographs is Gen Otsuka. His press photos were nothing too remarkable, and yet his private work that often incorporated montages were quite original. He was also the first newspaper journalist who took photographs and wrote articles as well.

This exhibition highlights these press photographers who also devoted to creating their own artistic photos, introducing the paths they took. In addition to newly acquired works by Kageyama and Otsuka, photographs and newspapers in the museum collection are on display.
