"4 Stories -The Museum Collection and Japanese Modern Art" Exhibition

Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art
Finished
The collection of the Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art is mainly composed of 20th century western art from abstract art to dada, surrealist art and the later developments after the Second World War. Recent additions have been mostly Rembrandts, the impressionists and works of the Ecole de Paris on one hand, and works by contemporary Japanese artists on the other. This has resulted in a gap in the collection, namely works from the Japanese modern era.

After the introduction of western painting techniques from the turn of the Meiji period, Japanese art has constructed its own mode of expression while being influenced by artistic developments elsewhere. Our shared ability to appreciate art in the present day has been nurtured through these works that became the central pillar for many collections throughout the country.

This exhibition will compare Western works selected from the collection and post-Meiji reformation works by Japanese artists side by side to throw a new light into the understanding of Japanese modern painting. This will also allow visitors to reconsider the collection of the museum from a different standpoint.
