Yuko Hanawa
In Buddhist art, gold is often used to symbolize the glory and spirituality described in sutras. Buddha statues are often covered with gold, and alters have gold decorations.

Yuko Hanawa creates golden ceramic objects. For instance, in "Habitat", she created a tall mountain surrounded by small mountains of clay and then colored in gold. Each piece measures 40 centimeters, small enough to be held in the arms. Cone shaped steep mountains with foothills spreading out like a flower appear modern, and yet the color gold generates a connotation to the spiritual world, emitting a distinctive sense of majesty. Her other works are "Light, Ponder" where birds fly around in floating clouds and light, "Being Here" where a butterfly perched on the edge of a flame-shaped ceramic object which is reminiscent of kaendoki, a type of Japanese ancient ceramic -- all of which incorporate natural motifs, prompting us to imagine nirvana.

After studying living design at a two-year college, Hanawa started learning ceramic from a ceramicist based in Kasama, a city close to her hometown, in 1997. She has been working with ceramic for 12 years now, and since 2006, she started making works that are the type of works on display at this exhibition. She always found fascination in the antiquity of ancient art and religious art, as well as decorative and compositional aspects of temples and alters. Wedging and shaping the clay carefully, she gives birth to unique objects which are similar to antique wooden sculptures. This exhibition showcases seven works.
