Musashino Art University Museum & Library

Artists

Yasuhiro Ishimoto
Photographer Yasuhiro Ishimoto has been working in the professional field over half a century. The Musashino Art University Museum recently received donations of 87 photographs created by Ishimoto, and this exhibition commemorates the occasion.

Born in San Francisco in 1921, Ishimoto studied at Chicago's New Bauhaus which was established by Moholy-Nagy. His representative works include "Someday, Somewhere," "Chicago, Chicago," "The Mandalas of the Two Worlds," "Moment," and many others. He received the Shiju-hosho Award in 1983, and the governmental honor called "Man of Cultural Distinction" in 1996. Though he is a widely recognized photographer in Japan, he claims that his home base is Chicago, maintaining his roots in the U.S. photography world. He has held a number of solo exhibitions in Japan as well as other countries including the U.S., but this is the first exhibition to feature his multi exposure color photographs in the world.

This series has adorned the covers of seasonal magazine "Approach" (Takenaka Corporation) since the spring 1973 issue, and were published in his book "Composition" (2008, Heibonsha). Ishimoto's works are at the height of modern art and at the same time they transcend categorization. This exhibition aims to reveal the allure of his multi exposure photographs.
