"Advertising of the Showa Period III" Exhibition

The Ad Museum Tokyo
Finished
The Museum of Advertising, Tokyo has held a series of exhibitions on the history of advertising, and this is the last installment in the series. Japan in the 1970s and 80s overcame the strain of societal problems produced by rapid economic growth, the dollar shock and two oil crises to become the world's second largest economy. Domestic production shifted from almost complete dependence on manufacturing to finance, logistics, services, mass media and other tertiary industries, while the consumer market matured and developed a concern for psychological and spiritual well-being instead of just material satisfactions. In this thriving economy, Japan's advertising industry expanded apace, with marked improvements in advertising theory and methods. Exceptional talents were nurtured and advertising revenues grew almost sevenfold.

This exhibition showcases 20 years of advertising history, from the adventurous policies of the 1970s through to the flourishing of advertising amid a diversity of values and approaches in the 80s.
