"Matisse and His Circles—France Wild, France Refined" Exhibition
This event has ended.

"When I look at a painting, I forget about what it depicts. What matters are lines, shapes, and colors." — Henri Matisse
Henri Matisse (1869-1954), a central figure in Fauvism, is, indeed, one of the pioneering figures in twentieth-century avant-garde art. He continued to challenge conventional thinking about painting throughout his career. The revolutionary yet emotionally and intellectually balanced new approaches that Matisse devised spread among other artists in France, and to other countries as well. This exhibition traces the paths of Matisse and other artists active in his circles, including Georges Rouault, Albert Marquet, Raoul Dufy, and Georges Braque of France, and, among artists from other countries, Joan Miró and Jackson Pollock, and explores the new forms of art that they created.
