This exhibition showcases works on the theme of "light" by two leading contemporary Japanese artists, painter Yoko Matsumoto and photographer Rika Noguchi.
Yoko Matsumoto (b.1936) began producing abstract paintings around the 1960s and discovered acrylic paints in the U.S. where she was based in during the late 1960s, becoming aware of new possibilities in the painting genre. Her continual practice with acrylic came to fruition during the 1980s and 1990s, leading her to establish an abstract style that was uniquely her own based on a pink color scheme. In recent years, she broke new ground with a series of oil paintings dominated by green.
Starting a career as a photographer in the early 1990s, Rika Noguchi (b.1971) came under the spotlight early on with a highly sophisticated series of works including "A Prime" (1997-). Her exquisite choice of themes and a unique sense of distance on her photographic surface are considered the vehicles to delve into the nature of photography as a medium, receiving high acclaim internationally.
Although Matsumoto and Noguchi work with different media, use different modes of expression, and are from different generations, they both deal with light as one of the main themes of their work. Light, of course, has been an important subject in art around the globe since ancient times. In such a climate, these two artists have taken on the extremely difficult challenge of representing light in a straightforward manner. Their accomplishments in the field of contemporary art will be introduced in a pair of solo exhibitions with the focus on their recent works.
