Borek Sipek
Tokyo University of the Arts, the Embassy of the Czech Republic and the Czech Center are organizing the first large scale retrospective in Japan of the work of Borek Sipek at the University Art Museum.

Borek Sipek (1949-) is a key figure in the contemporary Prague design scene. Sipek originally pursued a career as an architect, but he soon naturally gravitated to other disciplines such as interior design, lighting fixtures, glass handicraft, tableware and all the other objects that are contained within architectural structures. Subsequently, he became a trusted ally of the ex-Czech Prime Minister Vaclav Havel and was asked to take charge of the renovation of Prague Castle, an assignment that assured him a permanent place in the history of Czech design.

In recent years, Sipek has become known in Japan for his innovative takes on Bohemian crystal glassware that make use of traditional glass handicraft techniques from his home country. He is now aggressively pursuing projects in the Czech Republic, Germany, Holland, America and China.

This exhibition showcases representative classics as well as new works by Sipek that span architecture, interior design and glass handicrafts, taking full advantage of the museum's two storey space.
