The Japanese art world of the 1960s saw a multifaceted evolution of so-called avant-garde works that could not be classified as either painting or sculpture. From the 1970s onwards, artists began producing an explosive number of introspective, inorganic pieces. On the other hand, this was also a period in which a saturation of visual media began to take hold, with artists and designers working in magazines, comics and advertising making extravagant use of printed images. This exhibition showcases the wealth of imagery found in the book covers, illustrations, paintings, prints and objects produced by such key figures as Genpei Akasegawa, Kiyoshi Awazu, Akira Uno, Tsunehisa Kimura, Tateishi Tiger, Yoshiharu Tsuge, Hiroshi Nakamura and Tadanori Yokoo. A total of 650 pieces are on display.
