Yoichi Umezu, Chihiro Mori
Yoichi Umetsu was born in Yamagata in 1982. He is a promising young artist who won second prize at the 9th annual Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art after graduating from the department of fine arts at Tokyo Zokei University. Although Umetsu is known for his delicate, pointillist paintings, he also produces pen drawings and sketches made using sharpened metal.

Chihiro Mori was born in Osaka in 1978. After completing her graduate studies in painting at the Kyoto University of Arts, she participated in the group exhibition "The Door into Summer: The Age of Micropop" (2007, Art Tower Mito) and "Garden of Painting - Japanese Art of the 00s" (2010, National Museum of Art, Osaka). Mori's work, which consists of three-dimensional pieces made of waste materials and everyday objects, ink and pencil drawings and watercolors, seem to be distorted combinations of the chaos of fragmentary information that surrounds us. Their surfaces, which have been intentionally deconstructed and then reconstructed, seem to open up new possibilities for painting.

This exhibition was inspired by a mutual, earnest desire to rethink and redefine the acts of viewing and drawing through a comparative exploration of their respective works. On display are oil paintings by Umetsu and watercolors and 3D pieces by Mori.
