2nd Yebisu International Festival for Art and Alternative Visions

Tokyo Photographic Art Museum
Finished
The Yebisu International Festival for Art and Alternative Visions is an annual event that will fill the entire Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography building with ten days of exhibitions, screening programs, live events, lectures and talks. Here participants will be provided with a space to question, discuss, and share the issues that energize creative activities and affect how we transmit our legacy of superb visual expression and media development from the past to the present, and on into the future.

At the Yebisu International Festival for Art and Alternative Visions, our focus is on the many choices that images present, on exploring possibilities rather than confining ourselves to a narrow sense of the term "image." Our aim is to multiply our pathways to enjoying and appreciating images. Instead of classifying and ranking images, we juxtapose works that, at first glance, might seem diametrically opposed and provide opportunities to note easily overlooked subtleties.

For the 355 days between the closing of one Yebisu International Festival for Art and Alternative Visions and the opening of the next, the festival will continue on this website. In addition to extending the festival beyond its ten days of brick-and-mortar existence, the site will be linked with other image-related activities large and small in Japan and overseas, whether organized by public or private groups--information about festivals, exhibitions, new collections and archives, and awards and other support.

The Yebisu International Festival for Art and Alternative Visions provides a setting for a rich array of activities, giving creators a place to explore the significance of the work they engage in, and offering those who see the results opportunities to experience a wider range of expression.

The Yebisu International Festival for Art and Alternative Visions is a work in progress. Learning through experimentation and solving the new problems that present themselves each time we hold it, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography will not only serve as the festival's home base. We will also become a setting in which many different standpoints and viewpoints can intersect in fruitful, mutually stimulating encounters.
