Matthew Hansel
Matthew Hansel was born in 1977 in West Virginia, US. He studied painting at the prestigious Cooper Union School of Art in New York City. After receiving his bachelor's degree, Hansel attended Yale University and received an MFA in 2001. He now lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Hansel's work has been shown in several galleries in New York and Los Angeles. His paintings were shown in Japan for the first time in 2010 at the Yuka Contemporary booth at the Tokyo Art Fair.
Hansel grew up in West Virginia, an area rich in Civil War history. Along with his father, he would frequent battlegrounds and other historical sights. These experiences inspired his recent work, which explores history as a malleable construct for which the past is constantly revised. Its mix of realism and illusion distinguishes Hansel's work. The colors and perspective of figures and structures are often strained in order to create a time and place that is not specific. These imaginary historical narratives often blur the past, present and future.
"To fly one's colors", means to raise your flag with pride. To accomplish a task "with flying colors" means you have excelled in doing so. The characters in, With Flying Colors, seek to do both. The exhibition will include 10 new drawings and some nylon flags shown in an installation. We cordially invite you to enjoy Matt Hansel's colorful and unique world. The artist will be present for the opening on Saturday, September 18th.
