Tatsuo Ikeda
Ikeda was born in Imari City, Saga Prefecture in 1928. He joined the Naval Aviation division at age 15 and entered into a losing war at age 17 as a kamikaze pilot. After the War, he transferred into the Saga Teacher’s School, but dropped out after a year due to politics of the American Occupation. He moved up to Tokyo in 1948 to enter the Tama Art and Design School (currently the Tama Art University). Within a short time, he took his first steps onto the path of avant-garde art when he participated in the “Avant-Garde Art Workshop” formed by Taro Okamoto and Kiyoteru Hanada.

A sense of social consciousness grew in him with the outbreak of the Korean War and, as he searched for possibilities in reportage through paintings, he presented “The Fishing Boss (Within the Uchinada Series)” at the Yomiuri Independent exhibition that depicted the Uchinada conflict, a work that subsequently brought him much fame. Following this, he created a continuing series of pen drawings filled with satire and humor.

This exhibition traces the trajectory of the postwar era by introducing the many people that Ikeda worked with throughout his career, and also offers an overview of his work that spans 60 years, from the early postwar period to the modern day.
