Launched in April 2001, the Independent Administrative Institution National Museum of Art has entered its tenth year. To commemorate this anniversary, The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, The National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo, The National Museum of Art, Osaka and The National Art Center, Tokyo have made a concerted effort to present this exhibition.
Shadows are a common part of everyday life. This natural phenomenon might be divided into two general categories: "shadows," which are cast by people and objects at our feet and on the ground; and "shade," the dusky state that is produced by the obstruction of light in a place. While referring to these characteristics, in this exhibition, we consider shadows from a variety of perspectives in visual art, including the way they have been approached, the roles they have played, and the type of expressions they have inspired.
Shadows have been an important element in visual expression since ancient times. But as the way in which they were handled and the meaning they contained varies widely according to each specific era, area, and culture, shadows are a difficult theme to examine in a historical overview. In this exhibition, we attempt to illuminate a variety of aspects regarding shadows through a group of works from the National Museum of Art collection, which ranges from early-modern Western art to Japanese and foreign contemporary art. While enjoying a total of 173 works by 100 artists that were specially selected from the National Museum of Art's collection of over 33,300 items, it is our hope that you will develop a deeper understanding of shadows in art.
