"Africa x Japan x World: Space for Transforming Violence into Peace"

BankArt Studio NYK
Finished
Contemporary society is plagued by many kinds of conflict, and many "spaces of violence" have emerged. Can these somehow be transformed into a new kind of "space of peace"? What possibilities would new "spaces of peace" present for ameliorating conflicts in Africa? And are there possibilities beyond Africa as well? Sponsored by the Japan Foundation, from 11/1 to 11/15, 2010, project participants from Africa and Japan will conduct joint research and workshops across Japan, in Tokyo, Kyoto, Iwami Ginzan, Hiroshima, Sasayama, and Yokohama. They will meet with craftsmen and specialists in several regions, and will investigate the idea of traditional Japanese "spaces of peace." Based on these exchanges, the group will attempt to formulate a new kind of "space of peace" for Africa and the world. The results of these workshops held around the country will form the basis of the final symposium to be held in Yokohama.
