Taro Okamoto
Taro Okamoto celebrated his 99th birthday on February 26th this year, and 2011 marks the centenary of his birth. During his lifetime, Okamoto created a space entirely his own in his works, inspired by the tradition of oral mythologies from people around the world.

When he was 19 years old in the winter of 1930, Okamoto quit the Faculty of Oil Painting at the Tokyo Fine Art School (now Tokyo University of the Fine Arts) to go to Europe together with his parents, staying in Paris for 10 years by himself to absorb the latest knowledge pertaining to the fine arts and culture. At the Sorbonne, he studied ethnology under Marcel Mauss.

This exhibition introduces viewers to Okamoto's works from the perspective of mythology.
