This event has ended.

The cigarette Hi-lite celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2010. Introduced in the midst of Japan's postwar economic growth, the brand won the hearts of the Japanese people to become the symbol of that era. The package design was done by Makoto Wada, then a young designer at the age of twenty-four in his second year at the design and advertisement agency Light Publicity. Following the success of Hi-lite, Wada was commissioned an advertisement series for another iconic brand of Japanese cigarette, Peace, spanning from 1961 to 1964.

Today, Wada is one of the most famous graphic designers and illustrators in Japan, and has also proven his talent in editing, book designing, writing essays and novellas, making picture books, and even directing films. You would not have to look very far for the samples of his work, as some may be found in your bookshelf.

The wide range of his works, full of wit and urban sophistication, will fill the gallery, as well as new commissions in the theme of "tobacco" specially done for the occasion.
