Taro Okamoto
On the 26th of February this year,

Taro Okamoto celebrated his 99th birthday on February 26th this year, and next year marks the centenary of his birth. Over his lifetime, he was very much inspired by mythologies passed down by the oral traditions of people all over the world. When he was 19, Okamoto left the Faculty of Oil Painting at the Tokyo Fine Art School (now the Tokyo University of the Arts) to go to Europe together with his parents. He ended up staying in Paris for 10 years by himself, absorbing the latest knowledge in the domain of fine art and culture, studying ethnology under Marcel Mauss at the Sorbonne.

After he first encountered Jomon ware in 1951, Okamoto began traveling to various regions in Japan to discover unknown aspects of his home country and unearth forgotten mythologies traces of which could be found only in oral tales. This exhibition showcases the mythological element of Okamoto's own work.
