There is a new addition to the short films shown exclusively at the Ghibli Museum Saturn Theater.

The 8th film in the collection, Mr. Dough and the Egg Princess, will be screened in the Saturn Theater beginning November 20, 2010. An exhibition dedicated to the new film will also be unveiled on the same day and kicks off the second half of the annual Special Exhibition “The Ghibli Forest Short Films”.

In a lonesome water mill deep in a forest of briers and brambles lives a witch named Baba Yaga. There the witch keeps her servant the Egg Princess confined and forces the tiny egg-girl to do all the hard daily chores around the mill. One night, a large batch of kneaded dough resting in a trough suddenly comes to life from the witch’s spell. Fearful of the witch, the Egg Princess and her new friend decide to run away. What lies ahead for the two of them…?

For the second half of the Special Exhibition, there is a new area dedicated to this film featuring a diorama of the scene in a wheat field where the Egg Princess runs away with Mister Dough. Harvesting tools such as a sickle and a scythe, and real wheat grains are on display. The area is decorated with panels including comments and illustrations by director Hayao Miyazaki. There will even be demonstrations of flour grinding using a traditional stone grinding wheel. From wheat to flour to fluffy baked bread, the transformation process is thoughtfully explained.

That fluffy, tasty bread, how did it arrive in this world? What will become of it? Perhaps it is really alive…

※ Visitors allergic to wheat and any wheat byproduct should be advised that there are demonstrations of flour grinding at this Special Exhibition.
