Shoen Uemura Exhibition

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo
Finished

Artists

Shoen Uemura
Japanese-style painter Shoen Uemura (1875-1949) preferred motifs such as ordinary people as well as historical figures or characters yokyoku (Noh songs). She infused her subjects with strong emotions, but at the same time maintained a proper distance from them to produce graceful, occasionally rigorous portraits throughout her career. This exhibition presents about 100 masterpieces that explore the essence of Shoen's art.
