Artists

Chen Ruo Bing
Born in China in 1970, Chen Ruo Bing now resides in Dusseldorf, Germany and Beijing. After studying Chinese traditional painting and calligraphy at the National Academy of Fine Arts, Hangzhou in China, he moved to Germany in 1992. Since his graduation from the G. Graubner class at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf in 1998, Chen has exhibited his works in France, Germany, Japan and China. In 2000 he was invited to the United States under the artist-in-residence program at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Connecticut.

Chen repeatedly paints simple geometric forms on canvas, and gives equal value to the image and the background. This is his attempt to unite the tradition of Chinese paintings with the European modernism.

His shallow decorative painting spaces are very attractive, with the delicate blot of acrylic which reminds us of Chinese ink painting, simple geometric forms and bright color which evoke a sense of joy, and with the light overflowing from the inside of the painting.

The artist is interested in the concept of "body of light". Light essentially does not have any form nor mass by its nature. Nevertheless, he imagines a certain form and volume, paints it on canvas and the light comes to life. Whatever meaning and feeling - transcendental, existential or even humorous - viewers might get from these paintings, they will find them attractive, strange and interesting.
