Toru Ishii "Metropolitan Moment"
This event has ended.
At Mizuma Action - Nakameguro
Media: Painting
Toru Ishii's early work focused on motifs influenced by graffiti works associated with hip-hop culture. A study abroad stint at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in the UK, however, prompted Ishii to reconsider traditional Japanese artistic idioms and techniques in an objective light. His work now deals mostly with the figure of the Japanese salaryman in contemporary society, as well as urban environments in general. Using techniques that used to be employed by artists such as Korin Ogata and Hokusai Katsushika, Ishii depicts contemporary society in innovative, extravagantly conceived paintings that display an unprecedented sense of boldness and splendor.
