The Bridgestone Museum of Art’s collection includes paintings that have long been loved and admired. In 1980, to the surprise and delight of many, the museum acquired Pablo Picasso’s Saltimbanque Seated with Arms Crossed at a Sotheby’s auction. Picasso, having completed one phase of his investigations of Cubism, entered his neo-classical period, which began based on the inspiration provided by his travels in Italy. This masterwork is a splendid example of that period; in it, the overwhelming force of Picasso’s line and color grip the viewer’s heart. The painting formerly hung in the living room of the pianist Vladimir Horowitz.

This exhibition of works from the museum’s collection focuses on twelve preeminent works, of which the Picasso Saltimbanque is only one example, to examine why they are regarded as superb works of art and why so many people love them.
