Artists

Churyo Sato
Sato (1912- ) was born in Miyagi, raised in Hokkaido, and moved to Tokyo at age 20. He studied sculpture at the Tokyo University of the Arts and devoted himself to the production of figurative sculpture. Today, he is widely known as a master in the world of Japanese sculpture. In addition to his sculpture, this exhibition presents less known aspects of his work, illustrations and book designs as well as early oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, and plaster maquettes. It provides an in-depth exploration of the daily thinking process of an artist. There is a special focus on Sato’s Setagaya period of the 1940s when he began working seriously, showing his work primarily in the sculpture section of the Shinseisaku-ha Kyokai (New Creation Association).
