Arinori Ichihara
Arinori Ichihara calmly passed away on October 1st last autumn. He is well-known for his unusual career as an artist, achieving fame in Hokkaido as a haiku poet and alpinist while working for a post office in Otaru. His first encounter with art was at the age of 41, when his friend sent him an oil painting kit with which he used to draw. In 1960, he finally made his debut at Tokyo Gallery when he was 50 years old.

Ichihara’s encounter with prints was accidental, and was entirely the result of his environmental conditions. Scattering paints on the floor of the post office and using a metallic scraper on it, he created landscapes with layers of organic forms and accumulated metals.

This exhibition showcases large-sized monotype artworks from the 1960s to the 1990s, selected from the enormous collection of Art Front Gallery.
