"From the Pre-Raphaelites to William Morris" Exhibition

Meguro Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Morris et al.
The mid-19th century in post-Industrial Revolution England witnessed a loss of spirituality in the face of material wealth and a subsequent yearning for the values espoused by the Renaissance. Aspiring towards the simplicity and faithfulness to nature found in early Renaissance painting, young painters from the Royal Academy like William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which drew inspiration from the Bible, ancient myths and medieval tales. With the addition of William Morris and others, they later became influential on fin-de-siecle artists and Art Nouveau practitioners. This exhibition showcases over 100 oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, stained glass pieces, ceramics and furniture.
