Kees Van Dongen
In the early twentieth century, the Dutch painter Kees Van Dongen (1877-1968) caused a sensation with his paintings. Van Dongen’s distinctive painting style generated much excitement and glamour in the Parisian art scene.

In his early career, Van Dongen represented Fauvism along with his contemporaries such as Matisse and Vlaminck. He then became a popular figure of Ecole de Paris (School of Paris), which referred to non-French artists living and working in Paris from 1900 until about 1940, including Chagall, Modigliani and Foujita.

Van Dongen’s works were highly regarded in his lifetime. Today, the significance of the artist in the history of Modern Art continues to grow even further. This can be evidenced by the number of international museums that have recently organized retrospective exhibitions of his works. For instance, the Nouveau Musee National de Monaco chose the artist for its inauguration show in 2008. This was followed by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 2009, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 2011.

Galerie Tamenaga is pleased to present an exhibition of Kees Van Dongen, comprising a selection of about forty works depicting the themes of portraiture, floral, and landscape of Paris, Venice, or Egypt.
