“The Warmth of Celadon, the Brilliance of White Porcelain” Exhibition

Toguri Museum of Art
Finished
While the bulk of Japan's first domestically produced porcelain, Imari ware, consists of blue-and-white sometsuke ware and polychrome iro-e ware, celadon ware and white porcelain were also produced from an early stage. In the second half of the 17th century, when porcelain production techniques reached their zenith, Japanese celadon ware began to exhibit consistently beautiful glaze tones. Seiji sometsuke (celadon with blue-and-white decoration) ware, which combined celadon ware with delicately painted cobalt blue underglaze designs, grew increasingly lustrous, the white of white porcelain became an unadulterated pure white, and delicate and refined items with sophisticated forms produced by using molds and relief designs came to be produced. This exhibition features fine examples of celadon ware and white porcelain in which various methods have been employed to showcase their beautiful colors.
