"Kusama's Body Festival in 60s" Exhibition

Watari-um, The Watari Museum of Contemporary Art
Finished

Artists

Yayoi Kusama
This exhibition looks at Yayoi Kusama's art in the 1960s. Kusama left Japan in 1957 and starting working in New York after passing through Seattle. Over the next 16 years until her return in 1973 she was active not only in New York, but also in Italy, Germany and Holland, working on a range of working styles. She experimented with pop art, minimalism and performance art, and greatly influenced those genres. This early period of her work has been greatly acclaimed by overseas art museums, and a selection of important examples is touring from 2011 to 2012 across major venues in Madrid, Paris, London and New York.

This exhibition at Watari-um will show films of her work in their original versions, as well as many documents and texts with Kusama explaining her work in her own words, alongside installations and sculptures.
