Chen Ruo Bing

Chen has been painting simple geometric forms repeatedly on canvas ever since he was a student at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf, giving equal value to both the figure and ground. This is his experiment to unite, in his painting, the tradition of Chinese painting that is already a part of his nature, with European modernism.

With his shallow, decorative painting space, with the delicate blot of acrylic which reminds us of ink painting in China, simple geometric forms and bright colors that evoke a sense of joy, and with the metaphysical light overflowing from the inside of the painting, Chen produces very unique and attractive paintings.

In 2006, Chen staged a one-man show at the Shanghai Art Museum. In May, the Chen Ruo Bing Museum, also named the "House of Light", which displays only his works and Chinese antiques, opened in Jiaxing, in China's Zhejiang Province. In Japan, he joined the three-person show titled "An Existence" at Shiseido Gallery in Tokyo. He periodically has exhibitions at One Moon Gallery in Beijing and Wellside Gallery in Seoul, South Korea. His works are collected by museums in China and Korea. He is now attracting much interest not only from Europe but also from Asian countries.

In recent years the artist has been working on paintings with the "body of light" motif, which features a monolithic round form in bright yellow at the center of the painting. Now he is working more on paintings with the form of a circle representing the image of time. In this show, these circle paintings will be on view for the first time in Japan, together with his previous "body of light" works.
