"Hoitsu Sakai and the Edo Rinpa School" Exhibition
This event has ended.
Hoitsu Sakai (1761-1828) was born into the family of a senior statesman during the Edo period and became acquainted with the arts of poetry, painting and calligraphy from an early age. He is credited for the revival in interest in the work of Sotatsu Tawaraya, Korin Ogata and others of the Rinpa school.
This exhibition, which marks the 250th anniversary of Sakai's birth, showcases a selection of his masterpieces in addition to pieces that are typically overlooked in the context of the Rinpa school. Also on display are works by Sakai's followers and disciples, such as Kiichi Suzuki.
