Artists

Karel Zeman
Karel Zeman (1910-1989) is another leading artist who, alongside popular picture book writer and puppeteer Jiri Trnka (1912-1969), helped create Czech animation. During World War II Zeman started worked from Zlín, the bastion of Czech animation and, beginning with the pioneering "An Invention for Destruction", based on engravings and an original by Jules Verne, he became a master of trick cinema using a variety of techniques, including cutout animation and glass.

This exhibition is the first retrospective in Japan to look back at Zeman's whole career, and will feature puppets and other film resources. Further, visitors can view animation shorts downstairs, as well as enjoy daily showings of Zeman's longer films.

In the 2F lobby there will be film showings:
12:30 "The Tale of John and Mary" (1980) (67 minutes)
14:30 "An Invention for Destruction" (1958) (81 minutes)
