Noritoshi Hirakawa
Over a period spanning more than 20 years, Noritoshi Hirakawa has been traveling around the world conducting extensive fieldwork and making works that have been shown at over 300 exhibitions. His work deploys various media including photography, video, sound, text, film and performance in order to deal with themes that seem both challenging and vast in their scope - the physicality of the body, gender, media, religion, contemporary art. At the same time, however, Hirakawa's practice has been consistently and fundamentally devoted to an earnest exploration of the relationship between the individual and the systems that govern society, as well as the notion of free will.

His 2007 series of photos documenting the Hamaoka nuclear power plant, for instance, is part of the renewed discourse and debate surrounding the question of what art can accomplish in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the changing consciousness of the relationship of art to society.

This exhibition showcases new photos and an installation based on recent events in Japan, in addition to an older series of works based on the theme of human kindness and sympathy that Hirakawa constructed using advertisements taken from Artforum magazine.
