"Jan & Eva Svankmajer: Film and Its Margins" Exhibition

Laforet Museum Harajuku
Finished

Artists

Jan Švankmajer, Eva Švankmajerová
This exhibition follows a previous Svankmajer event at Laforet in 2007, and features sculptures, paintings, prints, drawings, collages and more. There are over 200 Svankmajer-esque artworks on display from the husband and wife team, most of which are being shown for the first time in Japan.

As the subtitle suggests, one of the kernels of the collection is film but these works are in effect throwing out the boundary between art museums and cinemas, and can be said to reveal the true core of the artists. What's more, especially for this exhibition the pair have created some wholly new work, including woodblock prints inspired by Japanese themes and motifs like Lafcadio Hearn's "Kwaidan", and more.
