Aya Ito "Smelling Mildly"

Aya Ito
Aya Ito’s works feature unique motifs such as zombies, ghosts, and themes that are “vulgar, not artistic but childish”. Viewers may be surprised, amused, and imagine that Ito paints them unrestrainedly and spontaneously. Her works, which embrace an unusual sense of space, however, are composed through a series of careful processes. Ito first creates maquettes and examines their visual effects by taking many photographs before she starts painting. She calls this method “photo-drawing”. In this way, she transforms unexpected things into a reality with a special sort of density.

On display at this exhibition are 4 to 5 new oil paintings featuring motifs of people created using the “photo-drawing” method described above, as well as several new drawings. She also plans to present these works in a unique installation in order to make the boundary between tableau and drawing less visible.
