Cerith Wyn Evans
Taka Ishii Gallery is pleased to announce our second exhibition with Welsh-born, London-based artist Cerith Wyn Evans. Evans has participated in countless exhibtions internationally with recent projects including To Know Him Is To Love Him, Casa Luis Barragán, México City, Marcel Broodthaers and Today, Düsseldorf Kunstverein, Düsseldorf, People Meet in Architecture, Biennale Architettura di Venezia, Venice (director, Kazuyo Sejima) and Contemplating the Void, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (all 2010). Within Japan, Evans has exhibited as part of Arts and Cities, Aichi Triennale, Nagoya, as well as at the Mori Art Museum (2009), Yokohama Triennale (2008) and CCA (the Center for Contemporary Art) Kitakyushu (1998, 2007).

Evans works in a variety of media consistently employing neon, mirrors, photography, film, lighting, text, found objects and sound in a manner at once cryptic and exceedingly generous. Referencing and engaging sources from a variety of cultural spheres both present and distant, Evans tempers a tendency towards the esoteric with objects rich in sensual presence. Possible to engage from various points of entry, the work of Evans resists closure, favoring rather a potential for speculation while approaching - however humbly - the possibility of prompting radical forms of communication.

The present exhibition will consist of three distinct works in conversation; the centerpiece comprised of three automated glass flutes accompanied by a new neon text piece based upon the Haiku of Basho, as well as Evans’s work, Un coup de dés jamais n’abolira le hasard, an elaboration of Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers’s translation of French poet and critic Stéphane Mallarmé’s highly anticipatory text. In addition to the works on view, Japanese experimental muscian Keiji Haino will perform live on the evening of the exhibition opening at the invitation of Evans. The performance is free and open to the general public.
