Tsuneo Enari was born in Kanagawa in 1936. After working as a press photographer for Mainichi Newspaper, Enari turned freelance in 1974. His work represents an ongoing attempt to document the social upheaval of WWII, and thereby to pose questions about the psychology of modern Japanese history. This exhibition showcases a selection of representative work as well as previously unexhibited pieces from his Hiroshima and Nagasaki series.

「戦争は悲惨だ」ということではなく、「教科書や映画で伝えられている悲惨な戦争は、現実に起きたことなんだ」ということを伝える力のある写真。

戦争遺産もさることながら、戦争が刻まれた人のポートレートが持つ迫力には圧倒されてしまう。旧満州に置き去りにされた残留孤児、広島の被爆者。その中には、先ごろ亡くなった「アオギリの語り部」こと沼田鈴子さんの大きなポートレートもあった。
