Subcultures such as punk, noise, psychedelic, alternative, hip hop and goth, imported once from America and Europe, are now maturing independently after mixing and mutating with Japanese linguistic culture, and in the kitsch landscapes of electric cables untidily hanging down. These subcultures have influenced Japanese artists profoundly, and then become visible as artworks.
SPROUT Curation defines the art phenomenon as “Alter-Japan” and intends to delve continuously into this critical context from various perspectives.
This first exhibition on this theme focuses on “Zen and Psychedelic”, searching the perpetual associations of chaos and silence, in various visual expressions such as paintings, photographs and video installations by Japanese artists, and verifying their own arrival points.
