Kenji Yanobe "Atom Suit Project: Antenna of the Earth"
This event has ended.
Atom Suit Project: Antenna of the Earth is an installation of a life-size figure of the artist himself in a radiation-detecting Atom Suit equipped with Geiger counters - an appropriation of the well-known statue of Kuuya Shounin, a monk chanting a sutra which is represented by the miniature images of Buddha coming out of his mouth.
Yanobe created this piece based on experiences from his visit to Chernobyl in 1997. The work embodies his desire to become an "antenna" that signals what is occurring in the world since the crisis. Prior to this project, the artist also created a radiation-resistant Yellow Suit in response to the threat of the Mihama nuclear power plant accident in 1991. Geiger counters have since become essential elements in his work.
For the past 20 years, Yanobe has been concerned with powers and phenomena that are beyond the reach of human control, producing works that are concerned with the themes of survival/revival.
More than 10 years after it was first created, we believe that the significance of Yanobe's "Antenna of the Earth" is broader than ever. We hope this exhibition will serve as an opportunity to examine Yanobe's artistic practice and to introduce new perspectives on the perilous reality in which we now live.
