The University Art Museum - Tokyo University of the Arts
Finished

Artists

The practice of burning fragrant wood was brought to Japan in the 6th century at the same time that Buddhist teachings were imported from China. Since then, Japanese Buddhism, aristocratic families, the warrior classes and the common people have developed an entire culture associated with these fragrances and perfumes. This exhibition showcases a wide variety of tools and implements associated with the traditional Japanese incense-smelling ceremony, as well as a selection of paintings dating from the Edo period until the current day that shed light on the distinctive aesthetic sensibilities associated with this culture.
