"To See as Artists See: American Art from the Phillips Collection" Exhibition
This event has ended.
Touching on avant-garde European art from the early twentieth century, American art, with the appearance of abstract expressionism after the Second World War, had a major influence on international modern art. American painting has its origin in the tradition of realism, which seeks to present the subject just as it is, and from that dawn the style was passed on down the ages. However, many of the artists also drew great inspiration from the country's grand nature and landscapes, and also its cities, such as New York's representative skyscrapers.
This exhibition draws on the Phillips Collection to present 110 works by famous artists, tracing the footsteps of American art, from the Modernism of the late nineteenth century, to the post-war zenith of the likes of Rothko and Pollock.
