Kiyoshi Hasegawa
This exhibition commemorates the 120th birth anniversary of the Yokohama-born master copper engraver and printmaker Kiyoshi Hasegawa, who enjoyed a long and varied career in France. Hasegawa was born in Yokohama in 1891 and dreamt of being an artist from an early age. He moved to Paris in 1981 to study copperplate printing and stayed there until his death in 1980 working as a printmaker.

Hasegawa's works combine Western printmaking techniques with Japanese aesthetics. He also revived the mezzotint method at a time when it had fallen out of favor, using it to create still lifes of birds, flowers and plants against a jet-black background. This exhibition showcases a selection of copper engravings made using a variety of different techniques that Hasegawa acquired in France, as well as his late period "maniere noire" (mezzotint) works.
