Isaku Nishimura
Isaku Nishimura (1884-1963) was born in Shingu, Wakayama, where he built himself three houses. The first one was the earliest example of an American-style residence in Japan. Thereafter, Nishimura made repeated efforts to refine his vision of an ideal lifestyle, which resulted in what is now the Nishimura Memorial Museum. Although similar residences of the period placed an emphasis on receiving guests, Nishimura's house featured a layout centering on the living area, which privileged a comfortable family life instead.

This exhibition introduces viewers to this third Nishimura house through photos, panels and models, in addition to a variety of chairs and other furnishings that he designed himself. A selection of 9 other buildings by Nishimura are also showcased.
