"Urban Abstract: Contemporary Abstract Paintings in Shanghai" Exhibition

Art Front Gallery
Finished

Artists

Ding Yi, Li Lei, Xue Song et al.
Chinese contemporary art is said practically to have begun after the Cultural Revolution. The artists have lived through tumultuous times, experiencing the setback to liberty following the Tiananmen Square protests and also the period of economic growth since, allowing them to open up their own creativity over an extremely short period of time. Today Chinese art is the most urgently watched movement in the world. However, much of this attention has been limited to the so-called "Chinese Pop" art that borrows from anime and manga.

In fact alongside this Chinese Pop scene co-exist many other genres and trends, such as modern water ink painting, video art and more. In particular, Ding Yi, Li Lei and Xue Song have been working in Shanghai in the field of abstract painting since the 1990s. This exhibition introduces 8 such artists unknown in Japan, focusing on abstract painting and also featuring print works.
