"Souvenir Movie Programs of Japan" Exhibition

National Film Archive of Japan
Finished
The pamphlets sold at cinemas are the most loved film resource for Japanese movie fans. These booklets of photos, narratives, film information, making-of stories and reviews are collectibles for connoisseurs as a "take-out film". They are also a rich source of Japanese cinema knowledge and a site of many critics' activities. Surely there is no other country more than Japan where this culture of film pamphlets has so blossomed?

This exhibition delves into the world of the free programs printed by cinemas during the Taisho and early Showa periods, and reveals the transitions to the post-war major film release priced booklets, through the golden age of western films, and the adjustment to the arthouse cinema movement.

There will be around 6,700 different types of film pamphlets on public display in the viewing room, selected for their nostalgia, and the visual and design creativity with which they represent cinematic masterpieces, bringing history, film memories and their eras back to life.
