Artists

Giovanni Segantini
Giovanni Segantini (1858-99) is known as an artist who painted many landscapes in the Swiss Alps. In the early years, Segantini painted farm life in his home country of Italy using a style heavily influenced by the French artist Millet. He was later drawn to the Swiss Alps and moved to a mountainous area at a higher altitude and with brighter sunlight to begin painting landscapes set against the expansive mountainscapes of the Alps. It was around this time that he established his Neo-Impressionistic style expressed in bright colors that influenced the avant-garde art of the following generation. In his last years, he became a leading Symbolist artist by adopting such themes as motherhood, life and death.

This exhibition will take the viewer through the life of Segantini, showcasing approximately 60 carefully selected paintings from collections at the Segantini Museum in Switzerland and other domestic and overseas sources. Enjoy the fascinating world of Segantini on the occasion of this retrospective exhibition, the first to be held in Japan in 33 years.
