"Samurai Houses" Exhibition

Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum
Finished
Japan's samurai houses of yore consisted of a "front" and "interior". These terms were used to refer not just to the spatial layout of the building, but also to more metaphorical roles and functions: the "front" of the house referred to the male head of the family and retainers, while the "interior" designated the place of the family and the female housekeeper and wife who looked after domestic affairs.

This exhibition examines the structure of these traditional samurai residences through examples from the Edo period, located in districts like Hatchobori.
