Artists

Pierre-Joseph Redoute
Having served Marie Antoinette as Draughtsman and Painter to the Queen's Cabinet, Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) became a protégé of Napoleon's wife Empress Josephine after the French Revolution and built himself a prodigious reputation in royal and aristocratic circles, where he was known as the "Raphael of flowers" and the "painter of roses." Throughout his entire life, Redouté continued to paint flowers with a precision that never obstructed their artistic beauty, works that continue to delight us today.

This is Redouté's third exhibition at the Bunkamura Museum of Art, showcasing all 144 works from "Choix des plus belles fleurs", widely considered to be one of his magnum opuses.
