"The Joy of Hospitality: Tea Party à la Japonaise" Exhibition

Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, Tokyo
Finished
Late nineteenth century London, Paris, New York: in the fast-rising nouveau riche of the cities of Europe and America rapid curiosity towards Japan developed on the occasion of the World Exposition. On the one hand witnessing these numerous artifacts and objects that conjured up a foreign land created feelings of affection, artists also saw in them a source for new creativity. In this way Japonisme caused a buzz in the world of the arts and all manner of works sprung up over diverse fields in western society, adding new foreign spices to people's lifestyles.

This summer the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum is hosting the "The Joy of Hospitality: Tea Party à la Japonaise" exhibition, examining how the beautiful objects of daily life in England and America - ceramics, silverware, glass, clothing and accessories - became a deep part of people's lives, and enriched humanity. Looking back at how these wares were made using sketches and other resources, it will also exhibit the living conditions and culture in America and Europe in which they were cultivated. Some 230 exhibits are planned, centered on the Davey Collection, and including contributions from Japonisme and the prints of "L'estampe orisinale".
