"Modern Japanese Prints" Exhibition

Chiba City Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Shiko Munakata, Kenkichi Tomimoto, Bernard Howell Leach
English potter Bernard Leach first came to Japan in 1909 intending to make a living teaching copper etching techniques, during which time he met Kenkichi Tomimoto and his contemporaries from the magazine Shirakaba. Later, Leach became close friends with Soetsu Yanagi, founder of the Mingei movement, as well as ceramicists like Kanjiro Kawai and Shoji Hamada. Shiko Munakata also exhibited his own prints at an artists' association founded by these figures.

This exhibition showcases copper etchings by Leach and woodblock prints by Tomimoto, Munakata and other artists.
